Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Protection in the EU
The Jean Monnet Module project titled “Rule of Law and Fundamental Rights Protection in the EU”, acronym R-EU-R, is a 3-year project coordinated by the Public International and European Union Law Department of the Law School of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) and is co-funded by the Erasmus + program of the European Commission (project identifier: 101127674 – scientific coordinator: Assoc. Prof. Rebecca-Emmanuella Papadopoulou). The project has started in December 2023 and is expected to end in November 2026.
The main aim of the project is to demonstrate the importance of the rule of law as a foundational value and legal principle of the EU legal order. The recent developments for EU law on the issue of the independence of the judiciary and the wider protection of the rule of law within the EU legal order has profound significance in the field of fundamental rights protection in the EU. Hence, the EU somehow stands in between adherence of the Rule of Law and protection of Fundamental Rights.
These developments, with constant new court decisions, require international collaboration between researchers and practitioners in order to evaluate the major legal changes. Such effort will provide the background for an academically challenging training and can provide post-graduate level education to students and practitioners.
R-EU-R aspires to provide a suitable academic environment, with experienced professionals specialised in the fields of rule of law and fundamental rights protection and carry on the following tasks:
1) A 5-day summer school to be delivered on an annual basis. It is organised as an intensive programme, which includes seminars, targeted tutorials and exercises.
2) A short intensive workshop to be delivered annually. This course aims primarily at lawyers, policy-makers and public workers.
3) An open conference gathering academics and practitioners.
